The Fluids You Should Know

Your vehicle relies on many different fluids for everything from protection against heat to motive power. Below, we’ll explore those fluids and what you should know about each.

Transmission Fluid: Whether your Mercedes has a manual transmission or an automatic transmission, fluid plays a central, albeit different, role. In a manual transmission, fluid is responsible for lubricating and cooling. In an automatic transmission, it has those responsibilities, too, but it is also responsible for shifting gears by creating hydraulic pressure. Check your transmission fluid at every oil change.

Engine Oil: The oil in your engine is one of the most critical fluids of all. It keeps the engine lubricated and protects metal components from damage. However, over time, it begins to wear out. It loses viscosity and becomes contaminated. Eventually, it has to be changed or you risk seriously damaging your engine. Oil should be checked regularly. We recommend monthly if you have a higher mileage vehicle.

Power Steering Fluid: Your vehicle’s power steering system is probably hydraulic, although Mercedes does have some drive-by-wire systems in production. Power steering fluid helps make it easier to turn your steering wheel through hydraulic pressure in the power steering rack. We recommend having your power steering fluid checked at every oil change.

Brake Fluid: When you press the brake pedal, the master cylinder sends a pressurized surge of brake fluid down into the brake lines to activate the calipers and slow down the car. Over time, brake fluid breaks down and becomes contaminated, and should be changed periodically. We recommend checking your brake fluid at every oil change.

Engine Coolant: Heat kills engines. To help safeguard yours, it is designed with a cooling system that includes the radiator, coolant hoses, a water pump, thermostat, and other components. However, the coolant is the most important part. Without it, all the rest is useless. We recommend checking your coolant level once per year in most cases.
