How Often Should You Change Your Oil?

Oil change service

There are an awful lot of myths surrounded how often you should change the oil in your vehicle. Oil changes are essential for maintaining your vehicle. Without consistent oil changes, you are doing more damage than you may realize to your engine and vital systems in your vehicle. But there is no real “one size fits all” approach to changing oil. As Cherise Threewitt writes for How Stuff Works, the old mentality of changing the oil every 3,000 miles is long gone. She goes on to identify that if you don’t drive very much or drive very short distances, you should focus on time and not miles. Some considerations for how often you should change your oil are as follows:

  • Type of Engine
  • How often you drive and how far
  • Age of your vehicle
  • Type of oil used

Angie’s List states that vehicles have much more sophisticated engines that require a higher quality of oil. The type of engine you have along with the type of oil that it uses means that you will likely be able to go more miles without an oil change. Synthetic oils are a higher quality and will last much longer. For this reason, many newer vehicles using synthetic oil can go as far as 10,000 miles without a change. But it’s not all about the miles.

Regardless of how little you drive, changing the oil at least twice a year is recommended. Rick Popely writes for that getting the oil changed at least as often as you rotate the tires is best practice for the longevity of your vehicle. Of course more frequent oil changes may be necessary depending upon your driving characteristics. But generally speaking, the old standard of changing oil every 3,000 miles is gone.
